CBM in Action in 2008
CBM in Action in 2008
In 2008, CBM trialled a new method of data collection to monitor and report on our activity around the world. The statistics show that our work with persons with disabilities together with partner organisations continues to prosper.
Last year, a total of 16.9 million beneficiaries in developing countries benefited from CBM’s work. For the first time, these statistics show the total number of individual patients seen; the actual number of patient consultations is higher.
The statistics show that healthcare work remains strong: CBM and partner organisations carried out almost 1 million operations, of which more than 650,000 were cataract operations. Numbers of ear and orthopaedic operations also increased.
The role of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in building inclusive communities is also significant. In total, over 500,000 clients were supported in 2008 with education and rehabilitation work representing disabilities such as deaf-blindness, multiple impairments and mental disorders.
CBM continues to support those with visual, physical and hearing impairments, and partners dispensed almost 1 million assistive devices, among them spectacles, low vision devices, orthopaedic devices and hearing aids, an increase of more than 100,000 in comparison to 2007.
CBM Member Associations in 2008 raised a total income of 103 million EUR. Approximately ten per cent of this amount was allocated to operational costs, with the rest going directly to programme work.
Now CBM is publicising the work it is doing together with partner organisations in two publications. The fully-accessible CBM Profile 2009 introduces the work of CBM. The Fact Sheets 2009 give more detail on the management, structure and trends in the work we do.
